A new regulation introduced last year now permits roadside assistance and recovery operators to use red flashing lights on their vehicles alongside the traditional amber lights. This change is expected to enhance visibility and significantly reduce the risk of fatal accidents by making recovery vehicles more noticeable to approaching drivers.
Working on the roadside is inherently dangerous. While it is known that several roadside workers have lost their lives in recent years and a number of recovery vehicles have been struck by passing traffic, obtaining accurate data—including near-miss incidents—remains challenging.
This progress follows years of dedicated campaigning by companies, industry associations, and roadside workers advocating for safer working conditions. The addition of red flashing lights improves the visibility of recovery vehicles and signals to approaching drivers that an incident is ahead, reinforcing the importance of caution on the road.
We are proud to celebrate this regulatory change alongside our roadside recovery partners.
