Background: Blinc Light® has introduced technology that backlights reflective materials on works vehicles to improve conspicuity on highways. This report examines the lawfulness of such illumination under UK regulations.
Regulations Overview: The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 strictly control vehicle lighting, allowing only specific colours and types of lights. Rear-facing lights must be red, with exceptions for certain authorised traffic signs and retroreflective markings.
Conclusion: Backlighting red elements of chevron markings or solid red material is not prohibited by existing regulations.
